What is the difference between a water filter and a water purifier?

A filter strains out bacteria and protozoa such as Giardia and Cryptosporidium, which covers the usual backcountry threats in North America. A purifier also removes viruses, rare in most wilderness water but a real concern farther afield or near human activity. A microfilter is the right default for most backcountry trips. Add purifier-level protection or chemical treatment when viruses are a genuine risk for where you are headed.

What does a 0.1 micron rating mean?

A 0.1 micron rating describes the pore size of the filter media. At that size the pores are fine enough to strain out bacteria, protozoa, and sediment, which are the threats most likely in North American backcountry water. Viruses are much smaller and pass through, which is why many microfilters are not purifiers. Know the difference for your destination, and read the label rather than assuming a pore size covers everything.

Squeeze, gravity, or pump: which water filter style should I choose?

Choose by how you carry water and who you travel with. A squeeze filter threads onto a bottle, weighs little, and treats water on demand, which suits solo hikers. A gravity system fills a larger volume at once and runs hands-free at camp, which suits groups or car-camping basecamps. A pump is the fastest path from dirty to drinking one bottle at a time but costs weight and effort. Match the style to the water you drink and the company you keep.

How fast is a backpacking water filter, really?

New filters flow at their advertised rate, and that number is optimistic. As a filter clogs with sediment, tannins, or algae, flow slows, sometimes quickly in silty water. Backflushing restores much of the speed, but with murky sources expect to clean more than once a day. When you compare filter claims, focus on how easy it is to backflush in the field and how the flow holds up with dirty water.

What ruins a water filter?

Cold is the biggest risk. If the hollow-fiber media freezes, the fibers can crack invisibly and the filter stops protecting while still looking fine. On freezing nights keep the filter warm and wet in your tent or close to your body, and never leave it in a car or outer pack pocket below freezing. Drops and hard use crack housings. Treat any water filter that has frozen as compromised and replace it.

Do I need a backup way to treat water?

A backup treatment is cheap insurance. A filter is the workhorse, but it can clog, freeze, or get dropped. Tablets or drops weigh next to nothing, treat virus and bacteria alike, and have no moving parts to break. Carry a handful, know the contact time, and you have a plan for any filter failure.
