What does a GPS watch actually do for backpackers?

A GPS watch tracks your day on trail: distance, pace, elevation gain, and a breadcrumb line of where you have been. Many also carry loaded routes, warn when you drift off course, and read an altimeter and barometer for weather clues. It works independently of your phone and runs for days or weeks, which matters on trips where the phone battery is spoken for. Treat it as one layer of a navigation system, not the whole system.

How long does a GPS watch battery last in GPS mode?

Battery life depends more on the GPS mode and screen you use than on the watch alone. Multiband, all-satellite recording with an always-on screen can last a day or two of tracking, while a reduced-rate expedition mode stretches into weeks. Compare watches using the exact mode you will hike in, not the headline number. Open ridges, thick forest, and canyon country each ask something different from the receiver, and that decides the real runtime.

Do I need a multiband GPS watch?

Multiband, dual-frequency reception helps most in hard terrain: deep canyons, steep walls, and heavy forest cover, places where a single frequency loses satellites and your track wanders. On open, established trails almost any modern watch tracks accurately on single-band. If you spend most of your time on marked paths, multiband is extra insurance, not a daily need. Reserve it for the terrain where you have actually struggled with signal.

How accurate are GPS watches on the trail, really?

Under open sky a good watch tracks within a few meters and logs distance to within two or three percent on a measured course. Accuracy degrades under tree cover, in side-slopes, and near canyon walls, where drift of ten to twenty meters is common. Elevation readings use the GPS fix or the barometric altimeter, and the barometer is the more useful number for a backpacker. Expect a day's GPS trace to look reasonable, not survey-grade.

How do I put a route onto a GPS watch?

Most watches load routes from their brand's phone app: you build or import a GPX file, sync it over Bluetooth, and the route appears in the watch menu. Route import is the most common day-one frustration, because each brand has its own app, file quirks, and pairing steps. Before you buy, check how the route you follow will transfer from where you plan to get it, whether that is a guide, a map app, or a shared track.

What GPS watch features actually matter for backpackers?

Battery life in the GPS mode you use, readable screen in direct sun, reliable track and breadcrumb display, barometric altimeter for elevation, and a comfortable strap on a long day are the backpack-critical ones. Built-in maps and turn-by-turn navigation are nice but not essential if you already read a map and carry an offline phone backup. Wrist-based heart rate and training metrics are largely irrelevant unless you already train with them.
